Access Program Navotas Brings Bright Prospects to Navoteno Youth

On June 09, 2014, the US Embassy Manila launched the English Access Microscholarship (Access) Program at Navotas National High School, in Navotas City. The Access Program is one of the U.S. Government’s premier English language programs. It offers talented 13- to 16-year-olds from economically disadvantaged sectors a foundation of English language skills by providing 360 hours of after-school classes and intensive sessions over a period of two years.

To mark the launch, Dr. Dawn Rogier of the Regional English Language Office Manila presented certificates of award to forty (40) students selected for the program.  Officials from  the city government of Navotas led by its mayor, Hon. John Reynald M. Tiangco together with school officials, representatives from the Department of Education, and the scholars’ parents attended the ceremony.

With improved English language skills acquired through the Access Program, participants benefit from enhanced employment prospects, which in turn increase the socio-economic success of their families and communities.  The program also exposes participants to a broader world of ideas and opportunities; increases their academic opportunities; and improves their chances of qualifying for U.S. Government and other exchange programs.

The Access Program also allows participants to explore U.S. culture and democratic values through hands-on activities such as drama, art, music, games, computers, civic responsibility projects, and leadership and teamwork training.

The Access teachers namely Mr. Marco D. Meduranda and Mrs. Josephine O. Fuentes also received teaching materials. The activity was followed by a lecture seminar on Online English Language Teaching Resources which was handled by Dr. Dawn Rogier and a workshop on Rubric Development for Alternative Assessment which was facilitated by Dr. Kelly Wonder, a Senior English Language Fellow. Certificates of recognition were given to them by the school principal, Dr. Maria Cristina A. Robles to express gratitude for helping raise the quality of second language instruction in the school.
